A heavyweight oversized t-shirt is usually 220 GSM or heavier cotton cut boxy with dropped shoulders; 180 GSM is mid-weight and anything under 160 GSM is light. In Pakistan oversized tees cost about Rs. 800 to 1,500 at markets, Rs. 1,500 to 2,500 on the high street and Rs. 2,000 to 3,500 from independent streetwear labels. Check weight, neck rib, seams and print before you buy.

"Heavyweight" has become the word every streetwear label puts on its tees, and it is worth knowing what it actually means. A heavyweight oversized t-shirt drapes straight off the shoulders, keeps its boxy shape after washing and hides what is underneath, even in white. A thin oversized tee does the opposite: it clings, twists at the side seams and goes see-through. This guide explains GSM, the fits, how to judge quality in your hand and what oversized t-shirts cost in Pakistan. RAAH makes oversized tees, so this is also where we explain how ours fit in.

GSM explained: 180 vs 220 vs 240+

GSM means grams per square metre: how much one square metre of the fabric weighs. It is the most useful single number on a t-shirt listing.

T-shirt fabric weight and what it feels like
GSMWeight classHow it wears
140 to 160LightThin, often see-through in white, loses shape quickly; common on cheap blanks
170 to 190Mid-weightThe everyday standard; soft, breathable, good for Karachi summer
200 to 230HeavyweightNoticeably thicker, holds a boxy shape, prints sit flat
240 and aboveExtra heavyweightStructured, almost stiff when new, softens with washing; warm in peak summer

Heavier is not automatically better. A 260 GSM tee in a Karachi June is hot; 180 to 220 GSM is the sweet spot for most of Pakistan most of the year. What matters is that the weight is stated and real.

Boxy fit and drop shoulder

A heavyweight fabric only looks right on the right pattern. An oversized tee is cut wide in the chest with the shoulder seam dropped onto the upper arm. A boxy fit adds a slightly shorter body, so the tee is almost as wide as it is long. Together they give the square silhouette that sits well over baggy jeans and cargo pants. We break down the differences in oversized vs drop shoulder vs baggy, and the oversized t-shirt size guide explains which size to order.

How to tell heavyweight quality

  • Hold it up to light: a heavyweight tee lets very little through, even in white.
  • Feel the neck rib: it should be thick, tight and lie flat, not curl or wave. A thin collar is the first thing to stretch.
  • Check the shoulders: look for shoulder tape inside the seam, which stops the shoulder stretching.
  • Look at the side seams: they should run straight down. Twisted seams mean the fabric was cut off-grain and will twist more after washing.
  • Read the label: "100% cotton" with a stated GSM tells you something. "Premium fabric" tells you nothing.
  • Look at the print: on a heavy tee a large back print should sit flat, not pucker.

Our 7-point quality check goes through each of these in more detail.

Premium cotton: combed, ring-spun and washed

Combed cotton has the short fibres removed before spinning, so the yarn is smoother and pills less. Ring-spun yarn is twisted tighter and feels softer than open-end yarn. A washed or garment-dyed tee, like a washed black, is dyed or washed after sewing, which pre-shrinks it, softens a heavy fabric and gives a slightly faded, lived-in colour. Washed black is the most popular heavyweight colour because it looks broken-in from day one and fades gracefully rather than turning brown.

Caring for a heavyweight tee

Wash inside out in cold water, skip the dryer and dry in shade. Heat shrinks cotton and sun fades black. Do not iron directly on the print. Looked after this way, a heavyweight tee softens and keeps its shape for years, which is the whole point of paying more for it.
